More Pensacola Chiropractor confessions : “I moved 27 railroad cross ties.”

railroad cross-tiesThe big creosote coated wooden beam that runs crosswise between the railroad tracks – the beam that they drive the spikes into – that’s a cross tie. Some people use them in their landscaping. They are big, quite heavy and bulky, and you will probably hurt your back if you move them around your yard. I know this personally. I confess that have wrestled with one or two. Once. I am a quick learner. It was my patient who moved 27!

The fact is, I talk to more people who were knocked to their knees when they bent over to pick up a pen than people who carried railroad ties or some other extreme physical stressor.

Why is that?
If you have an auto accident or fall, you expect to have some pain for a while, but the longer term effects on your back or neck are really more important.  When a trauma changes the normal alignment and movement through your neck or back, it leaves you with a residual weakness. That weaker area is prone to re-aggravation with a minimal stress, perhaps just bending over the wrong way. Because it’s not properly aligned, that weaker area will gradually degenerate, deteriorate and develop arthritis much faster than all the surrounding vertebrae and joints.

If you get occasional sharp pain in the neck or back, (even if it isn’t due to a fall or carrying railroad cross ties) get that area corrected. The sooner it’s corrected, there’s a less likelihood of arthritis or surgery in the future.

A Yoga Mat For My Dog And a Cher Wig For My Cat – Confessions of a Pensacola Chiropractor

Black Cat WigPeople will buy some crazy stuff.  Remember Pet Rocks?  The person who came up with the idea for Pet Rocks made a million dollars.

So I confess, I’ve thought if I really wanted to make a few million dollars, I’d think of some kind of exotic looking new product for back pain or headaches because people would buy it in hopes of an easy, magical fix. It would make sure it looked weird, exotic, and I’d make wild claims about the miracle healing it would afford.  And, of course, it would be a lie.

Don’t buy STUFF to FIX YOUR PAIN.

You are no dummy, but there are some out there who will buy a new mattress, a very strangely shaped pillow, a magnetic shoe insert, an electrical “Miracle Abs without exercising” device, and an odd looking back brace in hopes of fixing their back pain, neck pain, or headaches…

DON’T WASTE YOUR MONEY – Some of this stuff is expensive.  I had a patient spend $6,000 on some super special “heal-your-whatever” mattress.  It didn’t fix her…  You can get a TON of top level structural work on your spine for $6,000, and you would be focusing on the causes of your pain rather than trying to magically make it disappear.

A SIMPLE, LOGICAL thought about this.  If there was some product that worked, it would be the only product out there because word would get around. Everybody would buy.  Plus, there’d be no need to advertise it since it’s the only thing that truly works.

There’s no magic device.

Chiropractic doesn’t work all the time.  If it did, there’d be nobody else working on solving back problems. Some back pain cases are surgical, need a type of therapy that I don’t have in the clinic, or some will simply resolve themselves if you go home and treat it properly.  I have the good fortune to be able to pick the cases I will accept, and give advice to those who aren’t chiropractic cases.

THE SECRET – If you have a structural problem, it’s quite likely chiropractic will help you.  Save your money on magic “stuff” and find a Pensacola chiropractor nearby. call 850 479-2700

The Story of a Crazy Law

Ever have a door slammed in your face?  If you don’t know the new law, the auto insurance companies will do it to you.

The Beginning of Crazy
There are some people (in South and Central Florida) who stage an automobile accident, find a cooperating doctor who says they are badly injured, and then, have a cooperating attorney sue the auto insurance companies for big money.  This part of the story isn’t the crazy part; this part is factual.  It is illegal, of course, there are laws against it, and there have been convictions that put people in jail. Some doctors and lawyers have lost their licenses because of insurance fraud.  There are plenty of laws on the books, and when these laws are enforced, people get convicted.

SO – What does the insurance industry want to do?  They make the claim that more laws will fix the insurance fraud problem and will lower auto insurance rates for all Floridians.

Lower Rates? – Sounds good!

The new law is proposed. As it goes through the various insurance committees, the guaranteed reduction of insurance rates gets dropped. The rest of the law continues through the Legislature. Our Governor, Rick Scott, pushes this legislation with all the influence he has.  He calls legislators asking for their support for this bill. Not surprisingly, it gets passed.

What is in the final bill?

The insurance industry earns billons due to the reduced payments and benefits for Florida drivers who have been injured, AND no promise of auto insurance rate reductions. Politics are wonderful… NOT!

How It Affects You
The new law forces you to see a doctor right away whether you think you’re hurt or not. It takes away your insurance coverage for this accident if you don’t see a doctor within two weeks. THAT SOUNDS IMPORTANT, so I’ll repeat it – You must see a doctor, any doctor, MD or chiropractor, before the 14th day or forever lose your insurance coverage for this accident.

What To Do
If you have a consultation with me within that 14 day window, I might tell you to go home rest it another week, BUT you have your foot in the door. I can document that we consulted within 14 days, and you won’t be locked out of your insurance coverage.

I can tell you from experience that the insurance companies play hard ball.  I consulted with a young lady on day 16 and they told us very quickly that they had no responsibility at all. She missed her 2 week limit. The auto coverage that she paid for was gone.

Auto insurance is supposed to cover you if you are in an accident.  Don’t let them mess with you. IF ANYBODY YOU KNOW IS IN AN ACCIDENT, tell them to see a doctor within 2 weeks to protect themselves against these problems. Get your foot in the door so it won’t slam shut in your face.

Remember, if you need to heal, see Dr. Neal.
