Class IV Laser Therapy: favorite modality of Pensacola Chiropractor

One day, every clinic will have one.  Laser therapy isn’t new; just a few years ago, the high powered Class IV lasers were costing $80,000, and research centers and professional sports teams’ training rooms were the only places you could find them. When you have a million dollar pitcher with a sore elbow or shoulder, an $80,000 Class IV laser is a bargain.

GOOD NEWS – The prices have come down enough that they are now viable in top therapy clinics. They are even used in veterinary clinics. They have become very popular at The Neal Clinic of Chiropractic! Our patients love the results they get so much – we had to purchase another one to keep up with demand.

How does it work?
Laser light stimulates the tissues and literally speeds up the healing and recovery.  Back and neck injuries heal faster with better tissue regeneration, less scar tissue and less pain.  Even chronic problems respond positively with the increased circulation and anti-inflammatory effect.

On a cellular level, the laser stimulates the mitochondria to regenerate faster and the macrophages to carry away the injured cellular products faster.

How does the Class IV laser compare to other lasers?
Our laser is at least 24 times more powerful than the strongest Class II or Class III laser.  It has to be registered with the State of Florida and operated only by certified laser technicians in a separate laser treatment room.  Everyone present wears laser eye protection.  A 10 minute treatment with a Class IV laser does more than 4 hours of constant laser treatment with one of the lower powered lasers.  Yes, it’s a serious therapy, and we do it because we’ve seen very impressive results.

What conditions do you treat?
Laser helps just about any inflamed or painful condition.  We treat mostly back injuries, whiplash injury to the neck, disc problems, pinched nerves, hip joint pain, and some knee joint, shoulder joint, and plantar fasciitis problems too.

The Story of a Crazy Law

Ever have a door slammed in your face?  If you don’t know the new law, the auto insurance companies will do it to you.

The Beginning of Crazy
There are some people (in South and Central Florida) who stage an automobile accident, find a cooperating doctor who says they are badly injured, and then, have a cooperating attorney sue the auto insurance companies for big money.  This part of the story isn’t the crazy part; this part is factual.  It is illegal, of course, there are laws against it, and there have been convictions that put people in jail. Some doctors and lawyers have lost their licenses because of insurance fraud.  There are plenty of laws on the books, and when these laws are enforced, people get convicted.

SO – What does the insurance industry want to do?  They make the claim that more laws will fix the insurance fraud problem and will lower auto insurance rates for all Floridians.

Lower Rates? – Sounds good!

The new law is proposed. As it goes through the various insurance committees, the guaranteed reduction of insurance rates gets dropped. The rest of the law continues through the Legislature. Our Governor, Rick Scott, pushes this legislation with all the influence he has.  He calls legislators asking for their support for this bill. Not surprisingly, it gets passed.

What is in the final bill?

The insurance industry earns billons due to the reduced payments and benefits for Florida drivers who have been injured, AND no promise of auto insurance rate reductions. Politics are wonderful… NOT!

How It Affects You
The new law forces you to see a doctor right away whether you think you’re hurt or not. It takes away your insurance coverage for this accident if you don’t see a doctor within two weeks. THAT SOUNDS IMPORTANT, so I’ll repeat it – You must see a doctor, any doctor, MD or chiropractor, before the 14th day or forever lose your insurance coverage for this accident.

What To Do
If you have a consultation with me within that 14 day window, I might tell you to go home rest it another week, BUT you have your foot in the door. I can document that we consulted within 14 days, and you won’t be locked out of your insurance coverage.

I can tell you from experience that the insurance companies play hard ball.  I consulted with a young lady on day 16 and they told us very quickly that they had no responsibility at all. She missed her 2 week limit. The auto coverage that she paid for was gone.

Auto insurance is supposed to cover you if you are in an accident.  Don’t let them mess with you. IF ANYBODY YOU KNOW IS IN AN ACCIDENT, tell them to see a doctor within 2 weeks to protect themselves against these problems. Get your foot in the door so it won’t slam shut in your face.

Remember, if you need to heal, see Dr. Neal.

I have a headache

What if it’s a brain tumor? Sometimes it is.  Everybody has heard a story about someone who had a headache, and it was a brain tumor.  It’s always a possibility on the differential diagnosis list that I’m making in my head as I consult with a headache patient.

The problem is – it’s rare.  Really rare.  Less than 1 in 1000 headache patients actually have a tumor, so when it actually does occur, the first two doctors missed it, and instead, gave the patient medication.

  1. Stress and tension – Yes and No.  See my discussion below.
  2. Sinuses – Also Yes and No.
  3. Migraines/ Vascular Headaches – Mixed cause.  See below.
  4. Eye Strain/ Need New Glasses – Also Yes and No.
  5. Didn’t Eat Today or No Coffee Today – Absolutely Yes.

So, what do I mean by “Yes and No” in numbers 1-4 above?

Think of your headache like you would an itch on your arm.  There’s a long list of possible causes that have the same result. For example, using a poison ivy treatment cream is ineffective if you have a mosquito bite.

Headaches have triggers.  If you blame it on the wrong trigger, then your treatment won’t work.  Maybe your sinuses are a little stuffy, or maybe you will see better with new glasses. But those are rarely the reason for a headache.  All of these are often triggered by neck strain and misalignment.  The only headache on the list above that wouldn’t be affected by a neck structural problem would be #5.  But, I know you know how to solve that one.

If you have a structural problem in your neck, get it fixed!  It won’t guarantee that you’ll never get another headache, but remember the straw that broke the camel’s back.  If all those other straws weren’t already there, that one straw wouldn’t be effective.  A solid, strong neck will knock out most of your headache triggers.
